The ball must be too large to fit in her mouth. That is exactly how it works. If she can grab it, she will chew on it and the herding instinct will not be triggered.
If she starts to settle down and gnaw on it, take it away and redirect her. This is not a chew toy; it is a training tool. That distinction is important in every session.
Storing indoors significantly extends its lifespan. UV light ages the cover, cold nights lower the air pressure, and leaving it outside invites uncontrolled chewing.
